Carrousel | Feeling stuck in your own body

Recently, I discovered that I have a form of rheumatism. The first weeks were full of uncertainty, but a few weeks later, I began to feel more acceptance. This process brings a lot of emotions, questions, and lessons with it. In a carousel design, I try to take people along in my experiences.

    Soelaas | The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is an international movement and part of the universal Christian church. They believe in opportunities — in second chances, third chances, and every chance after that.
Their work includes professional care, community outreach, secondhand clothing services, and emergency aid for those who need it most.

Soelaas Magazine No. 11 – ‘Human Trafficking’
Human trafficking is a serious issue that often takes place under the radar. Victims are frequently unable or too afraid to speak out, while perpetrators operate in well-organized networks. The Salvation Army is committed to making a difference — supporting survivors and confronting this injustice.
The illustration for this issue was meant to reflect the gravity of the problem and visually convey the real emotions behind the experiences of victims.

Soelaas Magazine No. 10 – ‘Forensic Care’
For this issue, I was commissioned to create a visual story consisting of 10 illustrations, centered around the story of Eddy — a former inmate trying to reintegrate into society with the support of The Salvation Army.

The visual narrative follows his journey of recovery, struggle, and the step toward a new beginning. Each illustration highlights a pivotal moment in his life, capturing the emotional and personal layers of his path toward healing and hope.

Symbols can be a powerful addition to websites, social media, print materials, and more. In my work, I add flair and expression to symbols, taking them beyond the often clean and minimalistic designs you usually see.

    Encouraging Poster
As part of my graduation project, alongside a documentary animation (shown under Animations), I designed an uplifting poster. This poster invites you to create your own bucket list, to dream big, and to chase those dreams. It’s a two-sided design: one half focuses on planning and setting goals, the other on celebrating what you’ve already achieved. Because sometimes we forget to pause and recognize how far we’ve already come.

  • Workshop: Creating a Narrative Portrait in 1 Day | Adults

Workshop: Creating a Narrative Portrait in 1 Day | Adults

“A day full of creativity, depth, and connection where you will learn how to transform a personal story or theme into a narrative portrait.”

    About the Workshop

Together, we will search for the essence of your story. What gives you strength? What touches you deeply? What do you struggle with or dream of? Think ahead about a topic that occupies your mind – whether big or small, light or heavy. If nothing comes to mind, don’t worry! In the workshop, I’ll guide you through this process and you’ll naturally be inspired.

We will brainstorm together to find the right visual language and symbolism. I will assist you in choosing colors, finding a composition that supports your story, and letting go of the idea that a portrait must be “beautiful” or “correct.” You are free to work realistically, but also loosely, intuitively, or experimentally. Anything goes, as long as it conveys your message and resonates with you.

Materials such as thick paper, acrylic paint, pencils, erasers, and rulers will be provided. Feel free to bring your own favorite drawing or painting supplies!

    For Whom?

Groups of 10 to 15 people.
Suitable for both beginner and advanced adults.
This workshop can be booked for academies, retreats, company outings, groups of friends, or any other gatherings.

    Duration

    3.5 hours (including a break)

    Location

On location (with enough tables and chairs)

    Price

    Starting from €450,- per group
    (Including materials, excluding travel expenses)

I will ensure a pleasant atmosphere, with refreshments, and plenty of space to create, explore, and share.

At the end of the day, you will take home a self-made, cherished portrait – as well as the inspiration and tools to continue your work at home.

    Malu Bekker

I am Malu, and since 2019 I have officially been an entrepreneur, but in reality, it all started long before that. From a young age, I have been passionate about fashion (designing), painting, illustrating, and later also animating.

In 2021, I graduated Cum Laude from the Illustrated and Animated Storytelling program at AKV St. Joost in Den Bosch. Today, I work as a freelance illustrator and animator for various (social) organizations such as the Salvation Army and the Red Cross.

In addition to freelancing, I create paintings to give expression to everything that happens internally within myself and/or others. Images capture what words sometimes fail to express.

With this workshop, I hope to offer people a new expressive form to navigate their own internal world.

“A creative and relaxing day where you’ll learn to create a powerful portrait using acrylic and pencil – all in just one color.”

    About the workshop
During this workshop, you’ll work on creating a portrait that speaks through simplicity and the power of color. You will learn how to set up a strong foundation using a grid, and how to add depth, character, and emotion to your work with just one color.

Before the workshop, I ask that you bring a clear, printed A4 photo of someone you’d like to portrait – it could be a loved one, a friend, a famous person, or simply a face that resonates with you. You will also choose a color that holds personal meaning or just feels right to you – that will set the tone for your portrait.

All materials are provided: sturdy paper, acrylic paint, pencils, erasers, and rulers. However, feel free to bring your own favorite tools if you prefer – anything goes, nothing is mandatory.

A day filled with inspiration, focus, and fun – and you’ll leave with a personal piece of art that you can be proud of.

  • Course: Storytelling Through Portraiture | Adults

Course: Storytelling Through Portraiture | Adults

A course that invites you to see portrait-making through a new lens – with more attention to meaning, emotion, and narrative.

    About the course
In this course, the goal isn’t to create a perfect portrait, but to use portraiture as a tool for telling stories. Each session is centered around a unique assignment, with a strong focus on conveying emotion and visualizing personal or universal themes.

We’ll work in black and white throughout the eight weeks to fully concentrate on composition, form, contrast, and content. By removing color, space is created to truly explore the expressive power of an image.

My aim is not only to guide you in building technically strong portraits, but to encourage you to give meaning to your work. How do posture and body language express emotion? What elements can you add to strengthen your story? And how do you create imagery that resonates?

These lessons go beyond the classical approach to portraiture – they are designed to challenge you to look, feel, and imagine in new ways.

What will we explore in the 8 sessions?

    • (Exaggerated) proportions
    • Zooming in and out of the portrait
    • Posture and body language as carriers of emotion
    • Capturing mood and feeling
    • Working with symbolism and props
    • Materials and techniques
    • Light, shadow, and contrast
    • Detail and finishing

    For whom?
Groups of 10 to 25 people.
Suitable for both beginner and advanced (young) adults.
The course can be booked by academies, museums, libraries, community centers, or other groups.

    Duration
8 weeks of 2.5 hours per session (including a break)

    Location
On-site (with enough tables and chairs)

    Price
    €350 per person
    (Excluding material costs)

    What to bring

Your own A4 sketchbook (smooth paper, minimum 140 gsm)

A set of graphite pencils (Bruynzeel or similar), Black Conté crayon (available online or at art stores), Eraser, (Mechanical) pencil

I’ll provide a warm atmosphere, something nice to eat and drink, and of course, plenty of space to create, explore, and share.

By the end of the course, you’ll have gained both technical and conceptual knowledge of portrait-making – along with the inspiration and tools to keep creating on your own.

  • Workshop: Window Illustration | Ages 5+

Workshop: Window Illustration | Ages 5+

A creative and accessible workshop where you collaboratively create a unique artwork on a window.

    About the workshop
In consultation, we’ll decide on a theme in advance so that the final result becomes a cohesive whole – while still leaving plenty of room for individual creativity.

We start with a short introduction to the world of window illustration: I’ll show you what’s possible in terms of style, technique, and application. Then, everyone creates their own design on black paper as preparation for the real canvas – the window!

On the window, we’ll look together at composition, collaboration, and how to scale your design from paper to glass. The illustrations are rain-resistant and can easily be removed with water.

    For whom?
For anyone who enjoys experimenting with illustration in a playful and surprising way.
Suitable for groups of 10 to 30 people.
Available for primary schools, after-school programs, libraries, community centers, team outings, or other groups.

    Duration
45–60 minutes, or longer by arrangement.

    Location
On-site (with a suitable window and enough tables and chairs)

    Price
    Starting at €250 per group
(Includes material costs, excludes travel expenses)

I provide a warm atmosphere, something tasty to eat and drink, and of course plenty of space to create, explore, and share.

At the end of the workshop, you’ll have a collaborative artwork displayed on the window (for a short or long time) – and you’ll have discovered the joy of window illustration in a fun and creative way!

Workshop at Cool Arts and Culture – Heerhugowaard

For the open day of Cool Arts and Culture, I was invited to organize a creative workshop. Cool is a place where music, theatre, and visual arts come together, and where people of all ages can explore their talents.

During the workshop, the central question was: “What makes you happy?” Visitors – from children to adults – designed their own ideas and then worked together to create a large-scale artwork on the windows of the building.

The result: a diverse, collective artwork in which everyone could recognize a piece of themselves. A successful day filled with creativity and connection.

Meike – Cool Arts and Culture

“For our Open Day, Malu organized a creative activity where visitors could make a window illustration on the large glass wall of our second floor, with a beautiful view over Dijk & Waard. The preparation went very smoothly: communication by phone and email was quick, clear, and pleasant. On the day itself, Malu arrived well in time and had prepared everything thoroughly. She worked independently, radiated enthusiasm, and actively engaged visitors in the activity. We received many positive responses, and the colorful window drawings were a real eye-catcher. A valuable and successful addition to our program!”

Every year, Olympus College hosts a lively end-of-year festival filled with performances and creative activities for their students. For three consecutive years, I’ve been invited to lead window illustration workshops during this event.
Each year, we work with a new theme to keep the results fresh and inspiring. I’s always a joy to shape students’ ideas together and to literally cast the school in a different light.

Window Illustrations at Rozet – in collaboration with Kunstbende

Commissioned by Kunstbende, I led an inspiring workshop for creative young people eager to explore the art of window illustration. Rozet generously offered its windows as a canvas, and I had the pleasure of guiding the participants through the process of developing their own concept – from initial idea to final execution.

It was truly special to witness how each participant managed to translate their personal story into a powerful and visual image on glass.

    Liselot – Kunstbende

We have asked Malu, through Kunstbende Gelderland, to conduct window drawing workshops several times, and each time it has been a success. She approaches each assignment with great enthusiasm and knows how to create a pleasant, accessible atmosphere with her calmness, creativity, and positive energy, making everyone feel welcome.

Her approach makes it fun and educational for both beginners and experienced creators to participate. Through her approachable teaching style, participants quickly feel at ease and inspired to start working on their own. In short: highly recommended!

Short animation | Luxor Global Cinema

Animation offers a powerful way to capture and share (abstract) stories in a creative manner. Do you have a (short) story that needs to be told? I’d love to help bring it to life visually.

    Luxor Global Cinema
The Luxor Theater in Zutphen, one of the oldest cinemas in the Netherlands, wanted to go beyond mainstream programming and highlight non-Western films. Did you know that nearly 80% of all films come from Hollywood? Luxor aimed to offer a platform for broader perspectives and cinematic experiences.

I was invited to support the launch of ‘Luxor Global Cinema’, an initiative that encourages a more engaged outlook and a borderless mindset. The animation I created features 8 diverse voices, coming together to deliver a powerful message about cultural diversity and film variety.

Malu created a wonderful animated film for us, which we screened as a trailer before every movie for an entire year. Under the name Luxor Global Cinema, we wanted to show that our arthouse cinema is the place to watch films from all over the world — a contrast to commercial cinemas, where Hollywood dominates.

It’s a shame we only needed one film, because I would’ve happily made a new one with Malu every month!

    ‘The Glory or the Grave’
An animation and personal poster about the search for a lifestyle of your own.

Why should you work immediately after graduation and why can’t you give your life a big twist as an adult? Why live in a terraced house, enclosed by bricks when there are many more options? And, what if you don’t want to devote all your time to a full-time job?

In a conversation between father and daughter, the questions, doubts and most beautiful moments in a life are being shared. Centered around six major life themes, the maker leads you in an imaginative way through a lived life full of symbolism, emotion and color.

However, after the destruction that the city’s center endured, Nijmegen’s urban blueprint was almost blank. The reconstruction began. Concept Illustrations | App about grief

My illustrations are more than just visual art – they are a way to make complex emotions and abstract processes visible. Whether it’s personal, emotional themes like grief or concepts still in development, I help bring ideas to life in a way that speaks to and touches people.

    Grief Process Illustrations
For an app designed to provide support during the grief process, I developed two conceptual illustrations. My aim was to visually represent both the vulnerability and emptiness often felt in grief, as well as the growth and healing that is eventually possible.

The images are meant to touch on the complexity of grief with a universal character. Grief knows no boundaries of age, background, or gender, and I wanted to create a representation that everyone could relate to. The grief process is personal, but it is also something we all go through.

    OverHoop | The Salvation Army

For several editions of the Strijdkreet magazine – a publication by The Salvation Army about faith and purpose – I had the opportunity to create an illustrative spread.

Hope means being able to look towards the future with confidence and faith. It gives you the courage to keep going even when things get tough.

Magazine Hope – Christmas Edition of Strijdkreet

For this edition, the Christmas story was the central theme. I portrayed the journey of Joseph and Mary in a playful and contemporary way, using colors that align with The Salvation Army’s branding. A modern retelling of a timeless story.

    Atmospheric Ilustrations | De Meervaart

Sometimes, a concept exists only as an idea or in words – and that’s where illustration comes in. Atmospheric visuals are ideal for bringing developing plans to life or reinforcing existing ideas. Think of them as a visual summary of your company, vision, or concept. Illustrations make the abstract visible and tangible.

    The New Meervaart
For De Meervaart, I created an atmospheric illustration of their future location – a vibrant place that flows with the seasons. Since the building is still in development, an illustration is a powerful way to convey the project’s ambiance and intent. A great example of how imagery can stay one step ahead of reality.

Travel illustrations Azores | Personal work

In 2021, I spent five weeks traveling through the Azores – a place that completely stole my heart. The overwhelming nature, the calm, the ocean always nearby, and the mild climate… it truly felt like coming home.
During this trip, I didn’t just observe as a visitor. I also carried with me a quiet question: Could I live here someday?

As the last illustration shows, the island also felt limiting at times. Being surrounded by water is beautiful, but it also brings a certain sense of isolation. For now, moving to the Azores is off the table — but who knows, that might change again someday…

Window illustration | Paak | Lebowski

A hand-drawn window illustration instantly makes your shop or venue stand out. Whether you’re just opening your doors, want to highlight a special promotion, or transform your storefront for the holidays – an illustration grabs attention, invites people in, and tells your story.
Original, cheerful, and fully tailored to your shop and style.

I also offer workshops where you can learn how to draw on windows yourself – perfect for teams, schools, or creative groups (more about this under Workshops).

    The Big Draw
Commissioned by The Big Draw Netherlands, I’ve created illustrative storefronts for several shops. Each year revolves around a different theme, with artists being paired with local businesses.

    Pizzabar Rijlust – Tilburg

I was invited by Illustrada x Playgrounds to create a drawing around the theme “Let’s Draw Together.” My location was Pizzabar Rijslust. Combining the theme with the location, I came up with the idea to illustrate the process of making a pizza, with a pencil as tool.

    Iive portraits | Various events

Whether it’s a wedding, festival, trade fair, store opening, or corporate event – a live portrait adds a smile and creates lasting memories. In just 15 minutes, I draw your guests from a photo, capturing them from head to toe.

The result? A one-of-a-kind illustration that adds that extra touch to a special day. Even better: you give your guests something tangible and personal to take home – a little artwork to cherish.

    How does it work?
I work on location at a small table with pencil and paper (A5 size). Don’t worry, you don’t have to sit still for minutes at a time – I take a photo beforehand, so you can continue enjoying the party while I draw 😉
At the end of the event, the portraits will be ready for you to take home – a unique keepsake, right in your hands.

    Practical:
    • Price from €650 for 3 hours (approximately 25 people)
    • Excluding travel costs and potential printing fees
    • Want more people to be illustrated than the time allows? No problem – I’ll happily finish them afterward based on photos (additional cost by arrangement).

Curious about the possibilities for your event? Feel free to send me a message!

  • Welcome portraits

    Welcome portraits

Welcome Portraits are versatile designs that can be used for a variety of purposes. They’re the perfect way to introduce yourself or your business, but can also visually represent a city, location, or specific place. Whether it’s for a flyer, website image, (wall)sticker, or business sign – the possibilities are endless.

Think of new buildings, shopping centers, hospitals, clinics, and more! A “Welcome Portrait” creates a warm and unique reception, instantly giving your visitors a personal and inviting experience.

    Discover Arnhem

I designed a concept illustration that represents and introduces the city of Arnhem. This visual can be used in a variety of ways – from flyers and murals (such as at the train station) to signage at the city gates and beyond. It’s a creative and inviting way to highlight the city’s identity through illustration.

    Welcome Flyer | BuurtKadoos
BuurtKadoos is a welcome gift box for recently relocated residents, filled with thoughtful gifts and offers from local businesses.

After receiving one of these surprise boxes myself, I reached out to explore whether I could contribute creatively. This led to a wonderful collaboration where I was commissioned to design the welcome flyer.

In my design, I aimed to bring the vouchers to life and encourage recipients to discover the local initiatives. I often work within the brand’s color palette to ensure the identity of the organization is clearly reflected in the design.

The Welcome Flyer reached between 500,000 and 750,000 households!

    Sonny – Buurtkadoos

Malu approached us for a collaboration to enhance our product with a beautiful illustration that would capture the essence of Buurtkadoos. We gave the task of creating an image in which we would ‘capture’ each city, with a local character that depicted an average neighborhood as a cohesive whole. We wanted an illustration that would touch people, make them smile, and one that everyone could relate to. We are extremely happy with the work delivered; it is full of expression and dynamism, and has captured exactly what we were looking for. Our product has become more complete thanks to this unique illustration by Malu.

Looking for a unique way to capture the memories of your wedding day? Instead of a traditional photo on the wall, I create a painting that reflects the essence of your day – with a personal and artistic twist.

A Wedding as a Work of Art
A client asked me to create a special keepsake of his wedding day. He sent me his favorite photos, and together we explored how to translate these images into a painting that not only captures the atmosphere of the day but also tells a story about the couple themselves.
Each wedding painting is fully custom-made – from size to layout and style. I guide you through the creative process so we can create a one-of-a-kind piece that truly fits you as a couple.

    Collage travel paintings

I transform photos and memories into custom artworks – fully tailored to your wishes. One of my special focuses is travel paintings: from world trips to solo adventures, family holidays to that one destination that captured your heart. Together, we choose the photos, format, and overall atmosphere. The result is a one-of-a-kind artwork with deep personal meaning – a lasting, tangible memory.

    Five Continents
For the painting Five Continents, I worked closely with Irma and Hans to uncover the story that connects them: their shared passion for traveling the world. Using their carefully preserved travel photos, I created a collage reflecting the five continents they explored together.

By weaving these images into a cohesive composition, the final piece became more than a painting – it became a personal narrative of their adventures and lifelong love for travel.
